Monthly Mini Review

I don’t expect it will make any sense to those who have not read the earlier stories but for fans of the series (like me) it was a delightful little snippet. There’s no mystery to be solved in this one; it’s a short set at Christmas, focused on the last minute Christmas gift dilemma people who suddenly find out they are expected to give a gift to someone (when they didn’t know beforehand for good reason) and it has the usual quirky whimsical humour of the series. It was cute and sweet and I enjoyed checking in on Dixon and Yuri. It’s only 99c so those who have read the earlier books can pick this one up cheap.

side view of a pretty blonde young white woman in a red regency style dress standing near a green velvet couch and smilingWhen She Was Naughty by Tessa Dare – A Tessa Dare sent a Christmas gift to her newsletter subscribers so I got this one for free but it’s only 99c from etailers. It’s about 50 pages and it’s such fun. It’s a Christmas bon bon of delight, a frothy funny confection which had me laughing out loud. Chloe Garland believes the Earl of Deverell, Justin Montague, does not like her and disapproves of her frivolity and enjoyment of life. She thinks he’s a stuffed shirt but he’s around her family all the time since his only relative, a beloved cousin married into the Garland clan. She convinces him the annual Garland Christmas Eve ball is one where all the men of the family wear “ugly Christmas waistcoats” in a nod to ugly Christmas sweaters.

Only Chloe is wrong about how the earl feels toward her and a frank discussion in the moonlight inspires her to rethink their past acquaintance. Continue reading

There's a 1980 vibe to the picture.A Thousand Pounds of Dynamite by Adam Higginbotham – B When I was buying Higginbotham’s audiobook on Chernobyl, I saw there was a short (just about 2.5 hours) audio by the same author. The author reads the story, which was originally a longform article for The Atavist (which I’d not heard of before). Then Audible had a sale and I picked it up at 50% off – about $3.00. A Thousand Pounds of Dynamite tells the true story of Big John Burgis, who tried to extort $US 3 million from a casino in Lake Tahoe in 1980. He stole a thousand pounds of dynamite and made a bomb in his shed, delivered it to the casino and threatened to blow everything up if the money wasn’t delivered to him. The story is extraordinary and all the more interesting because I’d never heard of it before. I gather that folks in Lake Tahoe still remember it and that current FBI trainers use the case as a teaching tool but the story hasn’t really sunk into the collective consciousness. Continue reading

On the top right of the heart stand two men, casually dressed, hand in hand.When Was The Last Time by Kelly Jensen – B- This short story (it’s about 40 pages) is a relationship-in-trouble story. Paul and Evan have been together for 15 years but in the past 12 months, their sex life has gone stale. Evan raises it one morning and Paul realises he needs to reprioritise. He’s worried he might lose Evan if he doesn’t change. He plans a romantic Valentine’s Day date but interstate work runs late and he’s faced with a decision to potentially damage his career or potentially damage his relationship.

My impression was the Evan wasn’t anywhere near the stage of walking out but Paul’s wake-up is nevertheless a welcome one. It’s sweet and romantic without a ton of detail. I was curious as to why Evan chose that particular day to raise the issue with Paul – but as there was only Paul’s POV, it remained a mystery.
